◉ Newsletter | Linking Seminar 2024
Hi,
There has been a long gap between this newsletter and the prior one. I hope you've been doing well in that gap! There are many reasons for this gap, which I might get into in future newsletters (or blog posts and podcasts), but I'm not going to get into them now.
Why not get into them? Because I've got something important I want to announce.
Linking Seminar
For the past two years, I've organized a small "linking seminar" in the Chicagoland area. Each year, I rent a space and bring an experienced psychoanalyst who is a member of the Lacanian Compas, the New Lacanian School (NLS), and the Lacanian Compas and also a member of the New Lacanian School (NLS) and World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP).
The seminar meets in person for one day, during which the guest lecturer gives a lecture (or series of short lectures) on the seminar's theme. There is a lunch break, and after the lunch break, clinical cases are presented that aim to demonstrate and transmit something about the clinical practice of psychoanalysis.
The seminar is called a linking seminar because it tries to establish a stronger link between the work that psychoanalysts (or those interested in psychoanalysis) are doing here to the Lacanian Compass, the NLS, and the WAP.
Linking Seminar 2024
(I've already announced this elsewhere, but I want to send it out to those who get this newsletter.)
This year, we will welcome Isolda Alvarez, who attended our linking seminar last year.
The idea for this year's Linking Seminar came to me as an image and two signifiers. The image was a Mobius strip, with the word clinic written on one side of the strip and the word school written on the other side.
The seminar will focus on the link between our work in the clinic, our work within the school, and the Freudian field more broadly.
More specifically, we will focus on formulating and constructing a case as a point where our work in the clinic and the school come together.
Logistics:
LOCATION:
We are currently looking at three venues for the event.
- One is the same venue we used last year in Downers Grove
- Another is in Oak Brook
- And a third is in Evanston
COST:
Early (discounted) registration will be open as soon as we determine the venue for the event. We can't say how much this will cost; however, you can expect it to be in the range of $80-$100.
For whatever it is worth, we don't make any money from this event. Registration fees cover the cost of bringing our guest lectures to Chicago and the venue and providing lunch to participants.
SYLLABUS:
To prepare for the seminar, become familiar with the orienting texts below.
- Assef, Jorge. The Pass and the End of Analysis, via Lacan Circle of Australia.
- Lacan, Jacques. There are Four Discourses, in Culture Clinic 1.
- Laurent, Éric. Institution of the Phantasm, Phantasm of the Institution. Courtil Papers.
- Miller, Jacques-Alain. The Turin Theory of the Subject of the School, via NLS webpage.
- Palomera, Vincente. What May I Expect from Psychoanalysis?, in LC Express Vol. 5, Issue 3.
We will host digital events (i.e., Zoom meetings) where some of these texts will be discussed before the Linking Seminar. In future emails, more info on when those will be held will come out.
I'll probably be sharing information about this seminar via this newsletter, but if you'd like to be on the email list only for the linking seminar, you can use the form below to sign up for it.
You can also email me directly if you have questions.

That is it for this one. More to come soonish.
